Ticks to Seconds

Minecraft runs at 20 ticks per second, so 1 tick = 0.05 seconds. Use this when reading or writing /effect, /schedule, /time, and /playsound durations.

Ticks

Used by /schedule (with t suffix), /time add, and most datapack timers.

Seconds

Used by /effect give and /schedule with s suffix.

/effect give — duration argument is in seconds
/schedule — t suffix marks ticks
/time add — argument is always in ticks

Quick reference

Common tick values and what they correspond to in-game.

TicksSecondsIn-game meaning
10.05sOne game tick — the smallest scheduling unit. Redstone repeaters tick in 2-tick steps.
20.1sOne redstone tick — the minimum repeater/comparator delay.
201sOne real-time second. Common /schedule loop interval.
402sDefault mob attack cooldown for many hostiles.
1005sHalf the default Awkward-based potion length (split). Common short buff window.
20010sLava bucket TNT igniter range. Standard /effect test duration.
60030sDefault duration of an instant potion's particle aura, and of /effect give @p speed 30 1.
1,20060s (1 min)Default duration of most Level-II potions (Strength II, Swiftness II).
1,80090s (1.5 min)Tier-II level-1 extended via Redstone — e.g. long Leaping II would land near here on some variants.
3,600180s (3 min)Default duration of most regular (non-II, non-extended) effect potions: Night Vision, Strength, Swiftness.
6,000300s (5 min)Half a Minecraft day. Day-to-noon span.
9,600480s (8 min)Extended (long) variant duration for most effect potions brewed with Redstone Dust.
12,000600s (10 min)Day length — daytime portion of a 20-minute Minecraft day-night cycle.
24,0001200s (20 min)Full Minecraft day-night cycle. /time add 24000 advances one day.
72,0001hThree full Minecraft days.

Tick vs. real-time

  • Minecraft targets 20 ticks per second (TPS). Server lag can drop actual TPS lower, but command durations are always counted in nominal ticks — a 20-tick delay always means "20 ticks elapse," not "1 wall-clock second."
  • Redstone components tick in their own 2-tick rhythm (a "redstone tick" = 2 game ticks = 0.1s). Repeater delays of 1-4 are 0.1s to 0.4s.
  • One full Minecraft day is 24,000 ticks — 20 real-time minutes at full TPS. Daytime is 0-12000; night is 12000-24000.

FAQ

How many ticks are in a second in Minecraft?
20 ticks. Minecraft runs at a fixed 20 ticks per second on both Java and Bedrock, so one tick is exactly 0.05 seconds. Server lag can drop the actual rate below 20 TPS, but commands and durations are always measured against the nominal 20 tps clock.
How long is 100 ticks?
100 ticks is 5 seconds. The math is ticks ÷ 20 = seconds. So /effect give @p minecraft:speed 100 1 grants Speed I for 5 seconds.
Does /effect use ticks or seconds?
In Java Edition, /effect give uses seconds. In Bedrock Edition, /effect uses seconds as well. The duration argument is always in seconds for /effect — the confusion comes from /schedule and /time, which use ticks. /effect give @p speed 30 1 grants 30 seconds of Speed.
Does /schedule use ticks or seconds?
Both. /schedule accepts a unit suffix: t (ticks, default), s (seconds), d (in-game days of 24000 ticks). /schedule function mypack:loop 20t and /schedule function mypack:loop 1s are equivalent — both run after 1 second.
How long is one Minecraft day in ticks?
24000 ticks — exactly 20 real-time minutes when the game is running at full TPS. Daytime is roughly 0-12000 ticks; night runs 12000-24000. Use /time set day (sets to 1000) or /time set night (sets to 13000) to skip directly.
What is 1200 ticks in seconds?
1200 ticks is 60 seconds (1 minute). This is the default duration of several Tier-II potions like Strength II and Swiftness II.
