How health works

  • Base max HP: 20 (10 hearts) for players. Mobs vary widely — 1 HP for tiny slimes, 500 for the Warden.
  • Health Boost: adds 4 HP (2 red hearts) per level. Health Boost V = +20 HP. Bonus hearts regenerate normally and persist until the effect ends.
  • Absorption: adds 4 HP (2 yellow hearts) per level as a one-time shield. Absorbs damage first, doesn't regenerate. Golden Apple grants 4 HP of absorption for 2 minutes.
  • Regeneration: at hunger 18+ with saturation > 0, you heal 1 HP every 4 seconds. The Regeneration effect heals 1 HP every 50/(level) ticks regardless of hunger.
  • Damage scaling: armor reduces incoming damage by up to ~80% with full Netherite. The Protection enchantment stacks an additional reduction.
  • Java vs Bedrock: HP values are identical. The attribute name is minecraft:max_health in Java 1.20.5+ (was generic.max_health before).

FAQ

How many hearts is 20 HP in Minecraft?
10 hearts. Each heart represents 2 health points, so 20 HP = 10 hearts. This is the default maximum for a player without armor or Health Boost effects.
What mob has the most health in Minecraft?
The Warden has 500 HP (250 hearts), the highest of any vanilla mob. The Wither is second at 300 HP, the Ender Dragon third at 200 HP. By comparison, an Iron Golem has 100 HP and a regular zombie has just 20 HP.
How do you set a player's max health?
Use /attribute @p minecraft:max_health base set <value>. For example, /attribute @p minecraft:max_health base set 40 doubles the player's max health to 40 HP (20 hearts). The attribute ID changed from generic.max_health to just max_health in Minecraft 1.20.5.
What's the difference between absorption and Health Boost?
Health Boost adds 4 HP per effect level to your maximum (so level III adds 12 HP / 6 hearts) and the bonus refills like normal hearts. Absorption adds 4 HP per level as separate yellow hearts that absorb damage first but don't regenerate — once consumed they're gone until you reapply the effect or eat a Golden Apple.
How much damage does a Creeper do?
A Creeper explosion deals up to 49 HP (24.5 hearts) of damage at point-blank range — far more than most players have. Damage drops off with distance. Wear armor or sprint away — without either, even surviving a near miss usually leaves a player with 2-4 HP.
How do you damage a player with a command?
Use /damage @p <amount> [<damageType>]. /damage @p 6 deals 6 HP (3 hearts) of generic damage. Damage types like fall, lava, magic, or out_of_world change how armor and resistance modify the result.
