Minecraft Smithing Templates

All 19 Smithing Templates in Minecraft: 18 armor trim templates and the Netherite Upgrade. Each lists where to find it, the block needed to duplicate it, and a copyable /give command.

How to apply a template

Open a Smithing Table and fill its three input slots:

  1. Template slot — the Smithing Template you want to apply.
  2. Equipment slot — the base item: any armor piece for a trim, or Diamond armor / tools for a Netherite upgrade.
  3. Material slot — a trim material (Iron, Gold, Diamond, etc.) for armor trims, or a Netherite Ingot for the upgrade.

The template is consumed on use, so duplicate any rare template before applying it. Armor trims are purely cosmetic — they don't change stats, durability, or enchantments. The Netherite Upgrade keeps every enchantment from the original Diamond item.

How duplication works

Place a template in the center of a Crafting Table, surround it with 7 Diamonds in the outer ring (skipping the bottom-center slot), and add the template's specific block in the bottom-center. You get 2 templates back from the original.

FAQ

How many Smithing Templates are there in Minecraft?

Minecraft 1.21.8 has 19 Smithing Templates total: 18 armor trim templates plus the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. The full list with locations is in the table above.

How do you duplicate a Smithing Template?

Place the original template in a Crafting Table, surround it with 7 Diamonds in the corners and along the edges, and add the template's specific duplication block in the remaining slot. This produces 2 copies of the template — the original is consumed but a copy is added.

Can the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template be duplicated?

Yes. Place the Netherite Upgrade template in a Crafting Table with 7 Diamonds and 1 Netherrack to produce 2 copies. It can only be found in Bastion Remnant treasure rooms.

What's the difference between an armor trim and the Netherite Upgrade?

Armor trim templates are cosmetic — they apply a colored pattern to armor based on the material you pair them with at the Smithing Table. The Netherite Upgrade is functional — it converts Diamond armor or tools into their Netherite versions, keeping all enchantments.

Which Smithing Template is the rarest?

The Silence Armor Trim from Ancient City chests has the lowest drop rate of any template — roughly 1.2% per chest. The Bolt trim from Trial Chambers ominous vaults and the Flow trim from regular Trial Chamber vaults are also very rare drops. Among older trims, Rib (Nether Fortress) and Vex (Woodland Mansion) are the hardest to find at ~7-9% per chest.

Can you trade Smithing Templates with villagers?

No. Smithing Templates only come from world generation in Minecraft 1.21.8: chests, suspicious gravel in Trail Ruins, Elder Guardian drops (for Tide), and Trial Chamber vaults. They are not part of any villager trade.

Do armor trims work on all armor types?

Yes. Any armor trim template can be applied to Leather, Chainmail, Iron, Golden, Diamond, Netherite, and Turtle Shell armor pieces at a Smithing Table. The trim is purely cosmetic — it overlays a colored pattern without changing protection, durability, or enchantments.
