/enchant
Enchant the held item.
What is /enchant used for?
What /enchant is for
Applies a single enchantment, at a chosen level, to the item a player is currently holding.
When to use /enchant
A fast way to add one enchantment in survival without an enchanting table or anvil — handy for quick upgrades or testing gear.
Why /give is often better
/enchant enforces level caps and item compatibility, so for over-leveled or impossible combos (Sharpness 1000, Infinity + Mending) you'll want to build the item with /give and the enchantments component instead.

Common questions
Why won't /enchant let me add an enchantment?
/enchant enforces level caps and item compatibility, so it refuses over-max levels or impossible combos. Build the item with /give and the enchantments component instead.
How do I enchant beyond the normal max level?
Not with /enchant — it's capped at each enchantment's max. Use /give with the enchantments component to create, say, a Sharpness 1000 sword.
Permission level
/enchant requires Cheats (op level 2). In single-player you need the world's "Allow Cheats" toggle on. On a multiplayer server you need to be opped — see /op.
