You mine in the Nether, use Efficiency V regularly (the speed bump compounds), or you don't want to recraft after a stupid lava death. Long-haul branch mining gets noticeably faster.
Pick Diamond when…
You're early-game or saving netherite ingots for armor (which benefits more from netherite's knockback resistance than tools do). Diamond's 1,561 durability with Unbreaking III is already absurd.
