The anvil repairs, renames, and combines enchantments on items using experience levels. It is the most powerful gear-maintenance block but degrades with use and obeys diminishing repair limits.

Full crafting guide for Anvil Step-by-step layout and ingredient sources.

What a Anvil does

  • Repair items with matching materials or by combining two of the same item
  • Rename items and name tags (renaming a tag lets you name mobs)
  • Combine two enchanted items, or apply an enchanted book to gear
  • Falls as gravity-affected block and can damage entities below

How to use the Anvil

Right-click to open. Put the target item in the left slot and the sacrifice (material, matching item, or enchanted book) in the right; the result and XP cost appear before you confirm. Each operation has a chance to chip the anvil, and the 'Too Expensive!' cap (40 levels) limits how many times an item can be worked.
